On September 9, 2025, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a new safety alert regarding the risks of lithium-ion batteries carried on passenger flights. The agency noted that so far this year, there have been around 50 incidents involving lithium batteries overheating, smoking, or catching fire on planes.

The FAA recommends:

  • Improving communication with passengers and crew about the potential risks of lithium batteries.

  • Reviewing and strengthening cabin procedures and training to handle lithium battery fire incidents.

  • Enforcing stricter rules against improperly packaged or undeclared lithium batteries in transport.
