The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the release of its Voluntary Battery Labeling Guidelines on August 7, 2025. Developed under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (Section 70401), the guidelines aim to improve how information about batteries is communicated across their entire lifecycle โ from manufacturing and consumer use to recycling and disposal.
The program encourages consistent, clear labeling on both individual batteries and battery-powered products, such as cordless power tools. Labels should provide details that help users identify battery types, understand proper handling and charging, and find recycling or drop-off locations.
Although participation is voluntary, the initiative is intended to enhance battery safety, reduce improper disposal risks, and support national recycling goals. EPA plans further outreach and coordination with manufacturers and retailers to promote adoption in 2026.
